Chapter 21

  • 21:1
    [bbe]And after parting from them, we put out to sea and came straight to Cos, and the day after to Rhodes, and from there to Patara:
    [kjv]And it came to pass, that after we were gotten from them, and had launched, we came with a straight course unto Coos, and the day following unto Rhodes, and from thence unto Patara:

    [bbe]And as there was a ship going to Phoenicia, we went in it.
    [kjv]And finding a ship sailing over unto Phenicia, we went aboard, and set forth.
  • 21:3
    [bbe]And when we had come in view of Cyprus, going past it on our left, we went on to Syria, and came to land at Tyre: for there the goods which were in the ship had to be taken out.
    [kjv]Now when we had discovered Cyprus, we left it on the left hand, and sailed into Syria, and landed at Tyre: for there the ship was to unlade her burden.

    [bbe]And meeting the disciples we were there for seven days: and they gave Paul orders through the Spirit not to go up to Jerusalem.
    [kjv]And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days: who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.

    [bbe]And when these days came to an end, we went on our journey; and they all, with their wives and children, came with us on our way till we were out of the town: and after going on our knees in prayer by the sea,
    [kjv]And when we had accomplished those days, we departed and went our way; and they all brought us on our way, with wives and children, till we were out of the city: and we kneeled down on the shore, and prayed.

    [bbe]We said our last words to one another, and got into the ship, and they went back to their houses.
    [kjv]And when we had taken our leave one of another, we took ship; and they returned home again.

    [bbe]And journeying by ship from Tyre we came to Ptolemais; and there we had talk with the brothers and were with them for one day.
    [kjv]And when we had finished our course from Tyre, we came to Ptolemais, and saluted the brethren, and abode with them one day.

    [bbe]And on the day after, we went away and came to Caesarea, where we were guests in the house of Philip, the preacher, who was one of the seven.
    [kjv]And the next day we that were of Paul's company departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him.

    [bbe]And he had four daughters, virgins, who were prophets.
    [kjv]And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy.

    [bbe]And while we were waiting there for some days, a certain prophet, named Agabus, came down from Judaea.
    [kjv]And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus.

    [bbe]And he came to us, and took the band of Paul's clothing, and putting it round his feet and hands, said, The Holy Spirit says these words, So will the Jews do to the man who is the owner of this band, and they will give him up into the hands of the Gentiles.
    [kjv]And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

    [bbe]And hearing these things, we and those who were living in that place made request to him not to go to Jerusalem.
    [kjv]And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem.

    [bbe]Then Paul said, What are you doing, weeping and wounding my heart? for I am ready, not only to be a prisoner, but to be put to death at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.
    [kjv]Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.

    [bbe]And as he might not be moved we did no more, saying, Let the purpose of God be done.
    [kjv]And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.

    [bbe]And after these days we got ready and went up to Jerusalem.
    [kjv]And after those days we took up our carriages, and went up to Jerusalem.

    [bbe]And some of the disciples from Caesarea went with us, taking a certain Mnason of Cyprus, one of the early disciples, in whose house we were to be living.
    [kjv]There went with us also certain of the disciples of Caesarea, and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge.

    [bbe]And when we came to Jerusalem, the brothers were pleased to see us.
    [kjv]And when we were come to Jerusalem, the brethren received us gladly.

    [bbe]And on the day after, Paul went with us to James, and all the rulers of the church were present.
    [kjv]And the day following Paul went in with us unto James; and all the elders were present.

    [bbe]And when he had said how glad he was to see them, he gave them a detailed account of the things which God had done through his work among the Gentiles.
    [kjv]And when he had saluted them, he declared particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his ministry.

    [cuvt]他們聽見、就歸榮耀與 神、對保羅說、兄台、你看猶太人中信主的有多少萬、並且都為律法熱心。
    [bbe]And hearing it, they gave praise to God; and they said to him, You see, brother, what thousands there are among the Jews, who have the faith; and they all have a great respect for the law:
    [kjv]And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law:
  • 21:21
    [bbe]And they have had news of you, how you have been teaching all the Jews among the Gentiles to give up the law of Moses, and not to give circumcision to their children, and not to keep the old rules.
    [kjv]And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs.

    [bbe]What then is the position? They will certainly get news that you have come.
    [kjv]What is it therefore? the multitude must needs come together: for they will hear that thou art come.
  • 21:23
    [bbe]Do this, then, which we say to you: We have four men who have taken an oath;
    [kjv]Do therefore this that we say to thee: We have four men which have a vow on them;
  • 21:24
    [bbe]Go with these, and make yourself clean with them, and make the necessary payments for them, so that they may be free from their oath: and everyone will see that the statements made about you are not true, but that you put yourself under rule, and keep the law.
    [kjv]Them take, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges with them, that they may shave their heads: and all may know that those things, whereof they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, and keepest the law.

    [bbe]But as to the Gentiles who have the faith, we sent a letter, giving our decision that they were to keep themselves from offerings made to false gods, and from blood, and from the flesh of animals put to death in ways against the law, and from the evil desires of the body.
    [kjv]As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from fornication.

    [bbe]Then Paul took the men, and on the day after, making himself clean with them, he went into the Temple, giving out the statement that the days necessary for making them clean were complete, till the offering was made for every one of them.
    [kjv]Then Paul took the men, and the next day purifying himself with them entered into the temple, to signify the accomplishment of the days of purification, until that an offering should be offered for every one of them.

    [bbe]And when the seven days were almost ended, the Jews from Asia, seeing him in the Temple, got the people together and put their hands on him,
    [kjv]And when the seven days were almost ended, the Jews which were of Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the people, and laid hands on him,

    [bbe]Crying out, Men of Israel, come to our help: this is the man who is teaching all men everywhere against the people and the law and this place: and in addition, he has taken Greeks into the Temple, and made this holy place unclean.
    [kjv]Crying out, Men of Israel, help: This is the man, that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place: and further brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place.

    [bbe]For they had seen him before in the town with Trophimus of Ephesus, and had the idea that Paul had taken him with him into the Temple.
    [kjv](For they had seen before with him in the city Trophimus an Ephesian, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.)

    [bbe]And all the town was moved, and the people came running together and put their hands on Paul, pulling him out of the Temple: and then the doors were shut.
    [kjv]And all the city was moved, and the people ran together: and they took Paul, and drew him out of the temple: and forthwith the doors were shut.

    [bbe]And while they were attempting to put him to death, news came to the chief captain of the band that all Jerusalem was out of control.
    [kjv]And as they went about to kill him, tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.

    [bbe]And straight away he took some armed men and went quickly down to them: and the Jews, seeing them, gave no more blows to Paul.
    [kjv]Who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down unto them: and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they left beating of Paul.

    [bbe]Then the chief captain came near and took him, and gave orders for him to be put in chains, questioning them as to who he was and what he had done.
    [kjv]Then the chief captain came near, and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and demanded who he was, and what he had done.

    [bbe]And some said one thing and some another, among the people: and as he was not able to get a knowledge of the facts because of the noise, he gave orders for Paul to be taken into the army building.
    [kjv]And some cried one thing, some another, among the multitude: and when he could not know the certainty for the tumult, he commanded him to be carried into the castle.

    [bbe]And when he came on to the steps, he was lifted up by the armed men, because of the force of the people;
    [kjv]And when he came upon the stairs, so it was, that he was borne of the soldiers for the violence of the people.

    [bbe]For a great mass of people came after them, crying out, Away with him!
    [kjv]For the multitude of the people followed after, crying, Away with him.

    [bbe]And when Paul was about to be taken into the building, he said to the chief captain, May I say something to you? And he said, Have you a knowledge of Greek?
    [kjv]And as Paul was to be led into the castle, he said unto the chief captain, May I speak unto thee? Who said, Canst thou speak Greek?

    [bbe]Are you by chance the Egyptian who, before this, got the people worked up against the government and took four thousand men of the Assassins out into the waste land?
    [kjv]Art not thou that Egyptian, which before these days madest an uproar, and leddest out into the wilderness four thousand men that were murderers?
  • 21:39
    [bbe]But Paul said, I am a Jew of Tarsus in Cilicia, which is not an unimportant town: I make a request to you to let me say a word to the people.
    [kjv]But Paul said, I am a man which am a Jew of Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city: and, I beseech thee, suffer me to speak unto the people.

    [bbe]And when he let him do so, Paul, from the steps, made a sign with his hand to the people, and when they were all quiet, he said to them in the Hebrew language,
    [kjv]And when he had given him licence, Paul stood on the stairs, and beckoned with the hand unto the people. And when there was made a great silence, he spake unto them in the Hebrew tongue, saying,
